Apprenticeships to boost local job skills

Release date: 16 July 2010

ApprenticeshipsFive new apprenticeships are being offered by New Forest District Council in a bid to boost local job skills.

People leaving school, unemployed, or simply looking for a new challenge, can apply for one of the apprenticeship places - in business administration, customer services, grounds maintenance, accountancy and as a vehicle fitter.

The successful apprentices will gain at least a year's on-the-job and local college training, which will lead to a nationally recognised qualification at the end. Apprenticeships are a priority of the Government and funds have been set aside for the training.

NFDC Leader Cllr Barry Rickman, said: "We are pleased to be able to offer these exciting opportunities for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who will benefit from the training and work experience.

"The council is supporting this initiative as, even in these difficult times, we feel it is important to provide real opportunities for local residents."

Portfolio holder for economic development, Cllr Maureen Holding, added: "Apprenticeships offer many advantages - as well as working towards a qualification, all the apprentices will develop skills which are relevant to their chosen career."
Successful candidates will receive a weekly wage whilst receiving their training, but no jobs will be guaranteed at the end of the apprenticeships, based at the Town Hall, Lymington, the Totton depot and at Appletree Court, Lyndhurst.

For more details, view the apprenticeship advertisements online at www.newforest.gov.uk under the Jobs and Careers section.

Anybody interested in applying should complete an application form online or contact New Forest District Council Customer Services on 01590 646120 for a paper application pack.
